About US
Because our other blog is lost in Blogger hell, it might be useful (or at least mildly interesting) to note how Darcy and Sarah know each other. Darcy and Sarah both hail from Lanesboro, Massachusetts (in the Berkshires of the western part of the state) and have known each other since the 5th grade. We were best childhood friends and had a very deep bond during some very challenging adolescent times. We ran cross-country together and were the slowest runners on the team but the team camaraderie and personal challenges transcended any issues we may have had about bringing up the rear.
We lost touch after high school. There were a couple of cryptic classmates.com notices during college but never any solid connection. A few months ago, Sarah was turned on to facebook.com and immediately searched out Darcy. One nice, long catch-up chat later and the wheels were spinning in Sarah’s head. Darcy had run 2 marathons- something Sarah had always thought was out of reach. Hmmm. Sarah began searching local marathons and found that Austin, TX had one that was highly rated and didn’t require qualification. She sent the link to Darcy. Darcy’s response- “is this a challenge?” Now here we are. Both signed up for the February 15, 2009 Austin marathon, in frequent contact with a long-lost childhood friend, and finding our inner strength that everyone else seems to get pieces of but we forget to take a helping of ourselves.
(Darcy’s Edit…)
Sarah neglects to mention the fact that she convinced me to drop my pompoms and cheerleading, and start running cross country, skiing cross country and entertaining the idea of track. She kind of “falsely” advertises that she was one of the slowest, because my recollection is that I was definitely the slowest and Sarah was consistently running a HECK of a lot faster!
I often thought of Sarah and wondered what she was doing. Growing up, she had an awesome bird for a pet. I remember her first futon. I remember her first attempt at driving stick, in the red 89 Dodge colt with no A/C cranking “Tap the Bottle and Twist the CAP”. I remember LONG talks on many of the nights that we spent sleeping over one house or the other. Or in that TINY camper on one of my family’s vacations. Sarah is the first person who introduced me to the joys of tofu. Sauteed with TONS of veggies and soy sauce over rice. YUM! Sarah was there the first day I got my period! In that embarrassing moment in the Dakota restaurant on my dad’s birthday… forever forging a new outlook on womenhood together!
I remember waxing parties, pasta parties, sleep overs on Tour De Berkshires (Cross Country Team’s version of “double sessions”), shooting stars on my back deck during those late night swims at my pool…
I am so excited to be embarking on this Journey with Sarah. I’m honored to be training with her, even if its virtually, and I can’t wait until I land in the great state of Texas a few days before Feb. 15! I will give her the biggest hug ever, and then we will have to have a margarita together!
Some friends just never let go of your heart… Sarah is one of those special people… forever kindred to my heart.
I am so poud of you two and I love you both. Need team support?
